Type 1 Diabetes, or Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus (IDDM), previously known as Juvenile Diabetes, Juvenile - Onset Diabetes, and Brittle Diabetes, accounts for 5% to 10% of all diabetes.

What Is Type 1 Diabetes?

Onset of Type 1 can be at any age but, usually starts in childhood or adolescence (<30 years). It is caused by the inability of the pancreas to produce insulin due to the body's own defence system attacking and destroying the pancreatic cells (cells of the pancreas).

This type of diabetes is not hereditary, though people can inherit a genetic predisposition, or tendency towards developing it.

 

Signs/Symptoms

Excessive Thirst
Excessive Urination (going to the toilet lots)
Weight Loss
Increased Appetite
Tiredness
Weakness
Infections are common.
The eyes, kidneys, nervous system, skin, and circulatory system may be affected.
